Life as an Enterprise High School senior in the 21st century is not exactly like what we experienced when the EHS class of 1968 marched through our senior year headed toward our graduation exactly 40 Mays ago.

But there are some similarities between what’s happening this prom weekend and the one we enjoyed while preparing to go out and grab the world by the tail.

If you never knew Sterlyn Speigner, your life is not as complete as it could be. Maybe these words will fill in a chink or two.

In perhaps the understatement of the year, Sterlyn was one of those fellows who never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

The tale he told about arriving on the scene so soon after bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde Barrow were ambushed and killed that the cigar in Bonnie’s left hand was still smoking and the left rear tire of their car was still spinning prompted Wayne Whitehead and Dick Adams to make a bet in April 1968, a bet kept secret for decades.

Members of Dorothy Searcy’s immediate family can easily fit into any popular size picture. But trying to fit images of families she’s touched during her lifetime into a single snapshot would be impossible.

Dorothy Bevis Searcy recently celebrated her 90th birthday as she’s celebrated those leading up to it: with her loving family on hand.

Dorothy Bevis and her brother, the late Bartow Bevis, moved to Enterprise with their parents when Dorothy was 9 years old and ultimately settled on West College Street next door to the Virgil Warren family, directly across the street from then-Coffee County High School.

When Elizabeth Russ Nelson Byrd’s name appeared on this newspaper’s obituary page, memories of some of Enterprise’s “finest” came flooding back.

First, “Miss” Elizabeth’s daddy, former Enterprise Mayor Dewey Russ, who in the late 1960s, long after leaving politics, hung around City Auto Sales where his brother-in-law, Sterlyn Speigner, and others of us worked.

One time, we’d sold two Dodge chassis to Smith Lumber Co. and had flown two employees to Columbus, Ohio, to get them and drive them to Nashville, where cement mixer bodies would be installed.

A little after 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 1977, the phone at Enterprise Banking Company’s West Gate branch rang. Becky Moates or Patsy Phillips answered it and said, “Ricky, it’s for you.”
