Shicky G’s, a barbeque bar and grill, officially opens its doors Aug. 1, but smokers will have to leave their butts outside.

The restaurant will offer indoor and outdoor eating, live music at night, a horseshoe pit, and the kitchen will be run by local favorite Jackie Jerkins, who got his start grilling at the Fire Department.

Owner Arthur Gilley said he is a non-smoker and wanted his first restaurant to be a smoke-free one.

“Some of these places,” said Gilley. “You walk in, and walk right back out and the smoke just stays on you. You can’t wash it off.”

Gilley’s restaurant is backed by his brother, Wiregrass developer Ronnie Gilley, and he hopes people will respond positively to his decision.

Gilley said even though he was told he might lose customers if the place was all non-smoking, he thinks more people might visit his business for that very reason.

“Another place I know (that is smoke-free) is Mellow Mushroom,” said Gilley. “And there should be more options.”

There is currently no state law prohibiting smoking in public places. A bill to enact a statewide smoking ban failed in the Alabama Legislature in May. Dothan and a number of other cities in the state, however, have enacted local ordinances severely limiting smoking.

Having a no smoking section in a restuarant inside closed walls is a bit like having a no peeing section in a swimming pool. Doesn’t matter, you still feel the warmth! I guess non smokers shouldn’t have the right to enter into a restuarant and come out without having inhaled all of the carcinogens and smelling like the cigarettes the person forced upon them sitting next to them because of their addiction to tar, nicotene, and other chemicals that cause cancer and heart disease.

People need to stop whining about smoking in restaurants. As far as a smoker having no regard for the person next to them, well if you go in a smoking establishment and sit in the smoking section, then you have no right to complain about someone smoking. Our air is polluted and we breath things and eat things that are harmful to us everyday. So stop complaining about what someone else does.

I applaud Shicky G’s for doing the right thing in making the new Sports Bar and Grill a smoke free environment. It will be so nice to go into a bar and not come out smelling like a dirty ashtray and being subjected to the added risks of inhaling second hand smoke which we all know is just as deadly as lighting up yourself. I cannot thank them enough for providing me a place to go in Enterprise and not have to set next to a smoker who has no regard for the person next to them. Smokers have the right to smoke, that is true, but they don’t have the right to cause harm to other patrons or employees who work in the establishment. I will support Shicky G’s every chance I have and I am sure others who care about a smoke free place to go for a couple of beers and some food will do the same thing.
