Enterprise city officials are advising motorists to stay clear of the Hwy. 167 North intersection at Boll Weevil Circle Tuesday, May 6, due to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) making improvements to the intersection.
City Engineering Director Stephen McCollough said road crews will make changes to the traffic signals and to the painted lines leading from Hwy. 167 North to the eastbound lanes of Boll Weevil Circle.
Currently, there are three lanes leading to the circle. The left one is left-turn only; the middle one is straight only; and the right one is right-turn only.
McCollough said on Tuesday the middle lane will be restriped and resignaled to allow vehicles in that lane to have the option of continuing straight into the Lowe’s shopping center or turning left onto eastbound Boll Weevil Circle.
McCollough said the changes will help traffic flow more efficiently from Hwy. 167 North to the east side of Boll Weevil Circle.
“They should be finished with it on that day,” McCollough said, noting the work will begin at 8 a.m. But he said there will be potential for bottlenecked traffic at the intersection while work crews are there.
“It will be better on the motorists if they can avoid the area,” he said.
Another road improvement project in the area involves widening and resurfacing of a 5.8-mile stretch of Hwy. 51 beginning at Hwy. 84 just north of Boll Weevil Circle and ending at the Hwy. 167 North intersection.
According to an ALDOT press release, Wiregrass Construction Company is doing the work and will be responsible for providing adequate caution signs, flag-persons, a pilot car and any other necessary control devices.
