Enterprise High School’s Class of 2008 is marking a banner year for scholarships, with students attracting nearly $5.6 million in offers and accepting nearly $3.5 million of those.

Guidance Counselor Cami McClenny said scholarship amounts tend to increase each year along with the rising cost of higher education, but she said 2008 does seem to be a relatively-stronger year. Last year, she said, students were offered about $5.1 million in scholarships, accepting somewhere in the $2 million range.

“I’m proud of our kids,” McClenny said Friday morning after a lengthy Thursday night honors program at Hillcrest Baptist Church. “They have really done a good job. And we have really good parent support,” she said.

McClenny said of the high school’s 380 seniors, 128 were offered scholarships. She said a student survey revealed 72 percent planned to earn a bachelor’s degree before joining the workforce, with 26 percent of those also hoping to earn professional postgraduate degrees.

Another 2 percent said they would go directly to full-time employment, while 7 percent plan to enlist in the military. Twelve percent said they would seek an associate or vocational degree.

“Forty-three percent of the financial benefits marched in with military commitments,” McClenny told the audience Thursday night. But she said academic scholarships still managed to take the lead.

“Forty-four percent of all offers were the result of intelligence,” she said.
