The Enterprise Ledger columnist Ricky Adams and local businessman Ronnie Gilley were presented Ray of Hope awards Tuesday morning by the Citizens Interaction Committee of the Enterprise Chamber of Commerce.
Committee Chairman Kim Fleming said the awards are presented to individuals and groups in the community who take the initiative to help make “The City of Progress” a better community.
Gilley was recognized for his contribution of warehouse space for a project that allowed victims of the March 1, 2007, tornado to receive much-needed clothing and other items that had been donated as part of the tornado recovery effort.
Adams was recognized for helping lead an effort to restore the city cemetery on Main Street, which was heavily damaged when the tornado passed through town.
Fleming said these Ray of Hope awards are the first that have been presented in about two years.
Adams said the cemetery restoration work has been a group effort, and he is grateful for the recognition from the committee.
“I accepted the award on behalf of everyone who has worked there,” Adams said.
He said there is still much work to be done on the cemetery, and those wishing to help may contact him for more information at . Those wanting to contribute financially may write checks made payable to “Enterprise City Cemetery” and mail them to Enterprise City Cemetery, P.O. Box 310075, Enterprise, AL 36331.
“We still have a lot of work to do at the cemetery,” Adams said. “It’s going to be an ongoing project for a while yet.”
